Today the ACLU of Louisiana urges the Rapides Parish Police Jury not to adopt a resolution concerning marriage. The Police Jury should stand by its vote from March 2, when it recognized that neither Rapides Parish nor any other local body can affect the laws governing marriage in Louisiana.
Executive Director Marjorie Esman said "Rapides Parish enjoys the benefits of many national corporations that employ its residents. Many of these companies have policies protecting their employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. While there is a difference between sexual orientation and marriage, for Rapides Parish to go on record as a place hostile to a significant percentage of its residents would send the wrong message to these and other employers who might choose to locate here, employ your residents, and make Rapides a welcoming place for everyone."
