We’re packing the court next week and ACLU supporters are invited.
Join us for Perkins v. Hart, a pivotal hearing that presents a rare opportunity to hold police accountable for violent, discriminatory misconduct.
The hearing is scheduled for May 3, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. at the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The hearing will be held in the West Courtroom on the Second Floor in Room 265. The courthouse is located at 600 Camp Street, New Orleans, 70130.
America's racist, violent system of policing is perpetuated by a framework of laws that make it nearly impossible for officers to be held liable for wrongdoings. Next week's hearing is a groundbreaking chance to dismantle police impunity in Louisiana.
The ACLU of Louisiana's Justice Lab filed a lawsuit against St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office deputies for violently arresting Teliah Perkins, a Black woman from Slidell, at her own home in response to a minor traffic violation – an attack that her teenage son recorded on his phone, and left her requiring emergency medical care.
Perkins v Hart is a significant case that will determine whether Ms. Perkins and her son are allowed to have a jury decide their claims concerning law enforcement's use of excessive force and the right to record police without retaliation.
We are honored to represent Ms. Perkins and her son. By bringing their case to court, they not only represent themselves but every Black person in Louisiana who has experienced racial profiling and excessive force at the hands of law enforcement.
Join us on Wednesday, May 3, at 9 a.m., as we pack the court in support of Ms. Perkins and her son, and demand police accountability.
