NEW ORLEANS—The ACLU of Louisiana is proud to congratulate ACLU client Edie Windsor on her victory at the Supreme Court today! Through her courage, same-sex couples who are legally married will now get the federal recognition that their marriages deserve. This is a great step forward for equality across the United States. Unfortunately the Supreme Court did not strike down state discriminatory bans on same-sex marriage, so Louisiana couples are still unable to be legally married here. Federal recognition for Louisiana couples legally married elsewhere remain unclear at this early stage. But this victory for the rights of same-sex couples is historic and past due, and we are proud to be a part of it.
