Who We AreHow We HelpIn the CourtsIn the PressIn the Community
The ACLU is founded on 1st Amendment freedoms – the right to free speech, the right to freedom of religion, the right to freely discuss and disseminate information, the right to express one’s political views without being punished.

We defend the right to demonstrate one’s cultural heritage.
We defend the right to worship any god, or no god at all.
We defend the right to be open about one’s sexual orientation, or to live according to one’s preferred gender.
We defend the right of teachers to teach science in school, and of parents to teach religion at home.

Here’s what we have been working on in 2008.

*We stood up for a teacher who was fired for making art that some found offensive in her personal time.

*We stood up for a sidewalk preacher’s right to preach outside a crowded bar.

*We spoke out on behalf of a student who was told she could not bring a same-sex date to her prom.

*We stood up for the right of New Orleans Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs to hold their Second Line parades.

*We have repeatedly stood up for families in Tangipahoa Parish. We have sued the Tangipahoa School Board seven times for infringing upon students’ religious freedom. Every judge to reach the merits of the case has agreed with us that it is not in the best interest of students to hand out Bibles in school, recite prayers at graduation, or have teachers endorse a particular brand of religion. These cases have made international news. To see more details on our Tangipahoa cases, click here.

We believe that the rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights are for all of us – rich or poor, regardless of skin color or ethnic origin or the size of one’s wallet.
